I wanted to add more plywood to the area and wanted to know if any specific type i should use.
What type of plywood to use for attic floor.
The decision regarding the thickness of plywood to use for the subfloor in the attic has a lot to do with how you intend to use the attic and it also depends on the spacing of the ceiling joists.
The building code allows for the use of osb in place of plywood for subflooring.
In that case you will need to use 3 4 thick plywood.
The cost savings is insignificant compared to the extra support offered by the thicker material.
My attic is located above my garage and currently the former owner had random pieces of plywood placed up there.
For joists spaced 24 inches oc use thicker inch plywood to prevent sagging between them.
If your plywood subfloor is too thin it might not cope with the load and it might creak or squeak when you walk on it.
It might seem impossible to haul it up to the attic.
Some screwed others not.
Plywood comes in large sheets.
The national wood flooring association recommends a minimum plywood panel thickness of 7 8 inch for joist spans of 19 2 to 24 inches and a minimum plywood panel thickness of 5 8 inch for joist spans of 16 inches or less.
As an alternative 3 4 osb can be used.
But there s no real reason to use plywood thinner than 3 4 inch.
I assume 3 4 inch but there are many types brands to choose from.
