Before you drill a hole in the wall make sure you have the correct drill bit for your wall.
What drill bit to use for stone walls.
It is difficult to repair a mistake in drilling on a stone wall so make certain you have the holes in the right place before you begin.
Step 3 drill holes.
For stone drilling get what is called a tap con drill bit.
According to the bosch encyclopaedia the cutting edge of a stone or masonry drill bit has a tungsten carbide tip and is usually chisel shaped.
So for example if you re using a 3 5 mm screw use a drill bit with a diameter of 3 mm.
If it is stone this bit will also work on stone or concrete like an exterior wall.
If you don t know yourself consult with a hardware store about what kind of equipment you need to use with the stone in your wall.
Other stone like limestone is extremely brittle and hard to drill.
You ll need a drywall bit for a sheetrock or plasterboard wall which most household walls are made of.
If you re using wall anchors as well as screws the drill bit and anchors should have the same diameter.
The tungsten carbide adds great durability to the drill bit.
Use water or a lubricant to cool the bit as you drill.
Be sure to use a hammer drill.
Alternatively if you have wood walls opt for a spur point bit.
You are also going to want to use a hammer drill to make your holes.
Rest from time to time remove the drill and spray the bit with coolant or water.
If it is an interior wall it is made from plaster on top of wood slats.
However if your wall is brick stone or concrete you ll need a masonry bit.
